Our Services

Family Service
accessible to all ages Contemporary music with guitar organ music choir at Widford only Fairly-traded refreshments served Duration

This service is accessible to people of all ages.  Everybody stays together the whole time (approx. 40 minutes), and we sing a mixture of modern and traditional songs of praise accompanied by organ or guitar, and occasionally other instruments.  Some of these songs are particularly suitable for children and have very catchy tunes.

The sermon or talk is usually illustrated with some form of visual aid, and is shorter than in some other services. We pray together with words (modern language) on a printed service sheet or projected from computer onto an overhead screen, and there are normally other prayers led in a variety of different ways.  Sometimes there are interactive "Zones" which people are able to use at their leisure.  Fairly-traded refreshments are served.

Holy Communion
Contemporary music with guitar organ music choir at Widford only separate children's activities Fairly-traded refreshments served Duration

At the Sunday Holy Communion service the whole church family comes together to celebrate God's love for us around a special symbolic meal of bread and wine.  As we eat and drink, we remember Jesus' death for us and prayerfully re-commit ourselves to following him.  We pray that in the same way as the food we eat nourishes our body, so Jesus will strengthen us for his service.  After the service, more substantial fairly-traded refreshments are served, providing an opportunity for people to encourage one another in Christian fellowship.

The service is usually fairly formal, reflecting the seriousness of the death of Jesus which the service commemorates.  Music is largely provided by the organ, but modern songs are sung as well as more traditional hymns.  The prayers are all in modern language.  People of all ages are welcome, and at Hunsdon we provide child-friendly activities and learning opportunities in a separate room during some parts of the service.

The service is open to everybody, but the bread and wine is for baptised Christians only.  If you want to look more closely at the reasons for this limitation or read more generally about the way Holy Communion is understood in this benefice click here.

In recent years the Church of England has agreed that baptised children may be admitted to receive the bread and wine along with everyone else.  For more on this issue, click here.

We also hold a service of Holy Communion on a midweek morning at the St Francis Chapel, Hunsdon.  This service has no music, no refreshments and no children's activities, but it is well loved by a regular congregation of retired parishioners.

Morning Worship
Contemporary music with guitar organ music choir at Widford only Fairly-traded refreshments served Duration

This is a modern language service generally suitable for people of all ages.  As at all of our other services, we spend some time praying for the church and the world, praising God in speech and song, and renewing our commitment to serve Jesus in the forthcoming week.  Fairly-traded refreshments are available after the service.

Evening Prayer (Widford Church only)
organ music choral setting with choir Duration

This service is formal, using the liturgy of the Book of Common Prayer (1662).  The organ and choir lead the congregation in the singing of hymns, psalms and canticles.  Certain parts of the service are also sung as priest and people join their prayers together in ways which have remained largely unchanged for centuries.  There is always a sermon to help us apply God's word to our lives today. Evening Prayer is always at Widford Church on the second Sunday of the month at 6.30pm.

Praise (Hunsdon)
accessible to all ages Contemporary music with guitar Fairly-traded refreshments served Duration

This service was originally called "Chapel Praise" and always took place in St Francis chapel in Hunsdon, but recently we have started holding it in the church building because the chapel is too small.  The service is very informal.  Music is almost all contemporary, and led by guitars and sometimes piano.  We are pleased to offer opportunity for people to give a testimony about God's work in their life.
